The 150km-long Waterberg range runs northeast from Thabazimbi past Vaalwater. It rises 2 100m, and its mild climate contrasts with wild terrain formed by rivers flowing through mountainous country, bushveld and sourveld grassland. This is Big Five country, and the presence of several first-class safari lodges makes it an ideal destination for wildlife-viewing holidays.

The undoubted highlight is Marakele National Park, one of the most beautiful in South Africa. It’s a wonderful place to take part in a walking or horseback safari as well as conventional game drives, and the landscapes are as fascinating as the wildlife that inhabits them.

The Waterberg is so ecologically important that it is protected by a UNESCO biosphere reserve – the ultimate seal of approval for these largely untouched habitats. Visiting the Waterberg will give you an authentic feeling of being an explorer, as the dramatic, photogenic scenery slowly gives up its secrets.
