Situated in South Africa’s North West Province, close to the border with Botswana, Madikwe deserves to be much better known than it is. But then again, we’re all in favour of well-kept secrets! Madikwe is a remarkable conservation success story: mere decades ago, this area consisted of marginal farmland, but a far-sighted decision was taken to convert it into a wildlife refuge instead.

Some 10 000 animals were moved to Madikwe, beginning in 1991, and today the reserve is home to over 60 mammal species and at least 300 types of bird. Madikwe protects vast open plains, woodlands and rocky outcrops, and is bounded to the south by the Dwarsberg Mountains.

Madikwe is an authentic Big Five game reserve, and it’s malaria-free. It’s known for its thriving population of wild dogs, and plays host to a number of luxurious safari lodges. Just 3.5 hours from Johannesburg, Madikwe is a hidden gem that we can’t wait to share with you.
